1930 POLICARPIO BAUTISTA, a native of Bulacan, made a living as a freelance house painter in his hometown of San Miguel. Though not exactly a lucrative occupation, Policarpio was proud of the hard work and dedicated that he poured into his craft. He provides his family with a suitably decent life through his valiant, day – to – day effort
1940 Eventually, the lure of the big city beckoned and he mustered enough courage to venture into it upon hearing of vast opportunities offered there. Upon his arrival in Manila, he learned that the growing trend was creating mural made of paint, stucco and glass bits in the ceiling of grand houses. Armed with serious zeal and determinate purpose, Policarpio resolute learned the rudiment of this innovative painting specialty.
After several minor contracts, his talent was finally recognized by a growing clientele. Soon he got his biggest break when he was commissioned to paint the murals in the mansion of Dona Magdalena Hemady located at New Manila, where the affluent families of the pre – war era resided.
A good – natured and soft - spoken man, Policarpio earned the trust and appreciation of the steemed matriarch. As the extensive renovation of the mansion was in full – scale, Policarpio volunteered to undertake the painting of all areas being renovated. He successfully pulled through this new undertaking and before long, he was earning the different aspect involved in this trade. With the welfare of his family on top of his mind, he soon enjoined his son, Marco, to assist him in this growing enterprise.
1947 Inspired by vast expansion opportunities after the war, MARCOS BAUTISTA steadily worked on improving his father’s legacy. Their client now included more prominent families like the Tuason, Prietos and Locsins, to name a few. With the booming of the construction industry, Marcos boldly affiliated himself with leading Chinese Contractors like So bros Construction, Beng Eng Construction and Ong Bie Construction.
His young son, Pete, was always by his side learning the ropes of their small enterprise. Soon, the painting of almost every infrastructure in the Chinatown area, the center of the trade and commerce, were being done by Marcos Bautista. The amiable, bicycle – riding man was well – zliked by the townspeople for his simple and unassuming ways. He and this son steadily worked on improving their craft as more projects started pouring in like Las Suerte Cigar & Cigarette Factory, La Perla
Cigarette Factory and Cheng Ban Yek Corp. (Baguio Oil), Phil. Blooming Mills. With sheer faith and determination, they were slowly creating a name as a full- fledged Painting Contractor.
1960 Amply equipped with the vigor and enthusiasm of youth, PETE BAUTISTA ‘s aggressive trade skills enable him to improve his business mettle. His father urged him to put up a company of his own. Emboldened by the experience he had learned alongside his father, Pete was ready to take on large – scale project. Indeed, his efforts paid off when he contracted the 10 – storey Tropicana Hotel in Ermita, Manila, his biggest project so far. The venture triggered the start of a new, dynamic phase in the business and he was soon affiliated with big construction companies like Federal Builders, Weldon Construction, etc. He likewise had the rare opportunity of working with renowned architects and designer like C.C. Castro, Berenguer Topacio, Arch. Aturo Luz, Arch. Mañosa while noted client included CDCP, Ever Group of Companies, Isetan and several others.
1985 Pete decide to put up a family corporation as soon as he realized that his son BOBBY BAUTISTA, a Civil Engineer, was ready to take on the responsibilities of heading the company as a Painting Contractor. It was then that the GENERAL COLOR DEVELOPMENT, INC. was born. Spurred by his father’s astute business acumen and his family’s professional assistance, they soon became a formidable team. Their success grew by leaps and bound having major high – rises and infrastructures to their name. They have conquered the business districts of Makati, Manila and Quezon City. Wide affiliation and accreditation in the construction industry made them an active part of the business circle.
Historically, the country has been dealt with the most serious blows to the towards the end of the century. The company had its share of pervasive setbacks caused by the domino effect of most companies’ financial woes. Such ordeals could have easily staggered the most seasoned businessman but faith, resilience and tenacity proved to be triumphant in the test of endurance.
Today, General Color Development continues to tread its serious journey towards creating a most prestigious and remarkable stature in the construction industry.
